Poker Games

The term 'poker' denotes any of various card games in which players bet that they hold the highest-ranking hand.

Poker is a card game, the most popular of a class of games called gambling games, in which players with fully or partially concealed cards make wagers into a central pot, after which the pot is awarded to the remaining player or players with the best combination of cards.

In order to play the poker games, one must learn the basic rules and procedures of the poker, the values of the various combinations of cards (called hand), and the rules about betting limits. Some knowledge of the equipment used to play is also useful. There are also many variants of poker, loosely categorized as draw poker, stud poker, community card poker (a.k.a. "widow game"), and miscellaneous poker games. The most commonly played games of the first three categories are five-card draw, seven-card stud, and Texas holdem, respectively; each being a common starting point for learning games of the type.

The opposition to real-life poker games is represented by online poker. Online poker games are played in accordance with rules nearly similar to those of its real-life counter. Though, as far as online poker gaming facilities are usually placed at special poker-devoted internet sites, the latter can provide a lot of other poker-related services of both informational and gambling kinds.

However, the humanistic nature of the poker game can be brilliantly reflected in a quote of Amarillo Slim: «Poker is a game of people... It's not the hand I hold, it's the people that I play with».
